Why DEI Matters to LWVDK

Our democracy is strongest when every voice is heard and every community is represented. LWVDK actively works to dismantle structural racism and other forms of oppression in our organization and community.

LWVUS DEI Policy (Updated January 2024)

The League is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging for all people. Discrimination or harassment of any kind will not be accepted within the League.

What DEI Means for Our League

🤝

Diversity

of People and Perspectives

We actively recruit and welcome members from all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. Our strength comes from our differences.

⚖️

Equity

in Policy and Practice

We apply a DEI lens to all programs and positions, examining who is involved, who will be impacted, and whether our work builds a more equitable community.

🌐

Inclusion

of All Voices and Visions

We create space where everyone can participate fully and authentically. Diverse voices strengthen our advocacy and our democracy.

LWVUS DEI Commitment

The League of Women Voters National organization has committed to DEI as a core organizational value. The 2020 LWVUS National Convention passed a resolution requiring all Leagues to adopt a DEI policy — reflecting a national commitment to building a more equitable and inclusive democracy movement.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are not buzzwords — they are commitments to our organizational mission. With our commitment to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy, we commit to equity for all voters and recognition that democracy is strengthened by the inclusion of all diverse voices within the community.

LWVUS acknowledges that our organization was not welcoming to women of color through much of its history. Understanding this history is essential as we strive to do better. LWVDK echoes this acknowledgment and commits to doing the ongoing work of building an inclusive organization.

Applying a DEI Lens

LWVDK applies a DEI lens to all programs by examining: Who is involved in the work? Who will be impacted? Are we centering the voices of those most affected? Does this build an equitable and inclusive organization?
